Course Aim

Locating underground services, such as electricity and gas, during excavation work is not only essential to the health and safety of operatives working on an excavation, but it is also vital to preventing costly disruptions during construction and civil engineering projects.

As a result, it is important that those working on the roads, no matter if they are an Operative or a Supervisor, are fully trained in using a cable avoidance tool (CAT) along with a signal generator (Genny). Our Cat and Genny course provides the training to help meet these needs.

A non-accredited CAT and Genny training course is typically run as a half day course, where candidates learn about:

  • Relevant health and safety legislation
  • Understanding site plans and hazard avoidance
  • Safe systems of work and digging practices
  • Pre-use tests, maintenance and operational techniques for equipment
  • Candidates will usually be required to pass a multiple choice test and practical assessment using a Cat and Genny.

Upon successful completion of the course, candidates will typically be provided with a certificate of training and ID card which is valid for three years.
